Prayers in honour of   the Sacred Heart of Jesus

(Can also be done on any other day)

Included here are the prayers we normally recite in common in front of the Blessed Sacrament at St Augustines Bourke Street City and St Joseph's Church Elsternwick on the First Friday of the month.

Our Lord promised great things to those who consecrated themselves to His Sacred Heart and who practiced this devotion through their loving trust in His goodness and their surrender to His love.

A special feature of the First Fridays is to have Holy Communion and to offer prayers of atonement to God for all the offences committed against the great Sacrament of God's love:  The Blessed Eucharist.

If it is not possible to receive Holy Communion because of this time of pandemic, or other circumstances  then we can in  place of it we can offer a spiritual communion.  One formula for  a Spiritual Communion will be given below.

In place of Sacramental Confession we will have an act of contrition with the intention to go to Sacramental Confession as soon as possible.  Under these extraordinary circumstances a very good priest has assured us that Heaven will honour the promises associated with the First Fridays  if we indeed do these two things.  But of course, if we have both Sacramental Communion and Confession available to us then this is the path to be taken.

Adoration

Let us think of Jesus in the nearest Tabernacle,

in the nearest Church to us.

Let us pause for a time

(one or two minutes or more if you so feel led),

to Adore Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament.

Pause for your silent prayer.

Adoration Prayer

Divine Redeemer, Who in Your infinite goodness, have been pleased to leave us Your precious body and blood in the Blessed Eucharist, we adore You with the most profound respect, and return You our most humble thanks for all the favours You have bestowed upon us, especially for the institution of this most holy sacrament.  As You are the source of every blessing, we confidently call upon You to pour down Your blessings this day upon us and our relations, and upon all those for whom we offer our prayers.

Lord we pray for  our own personal intentions.............................(Pause whilst bringing them to mind)

We pray for  the conversion of poor sinners (Those who reject God and who do not want to repent of evil and sinful ways).

We pray for the triumph of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.  (That Jesus may conquer hearts, souls and minds by the power and depth of His most wonderful love)

We pray for all of God's faithful at this time.  For all who cannot receive Holy Communion or attend Mass, that they may feel the closeness of our Loving Redeemer.

And that nothing may interrupt the course of Your blessing, take from our hearts whatever is displeasing to You.  Pardon our sins, O my God, which, for the love of You, we sincerely detest; purify our hearts, sanctify our souls, and bestow a blessing on us that may change us, consecrate us, unite us perfectly to You, fill us with Your spirit, and be to us in this life, a foretaste of those blessings which You have prepared for Your elect in heaven.  Amen.

Prayer of Consecration to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

To  You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus!  To You I devote and offer up my life;  all of my thoughts, words, actions, pains, and sufferings.  May the least part of my being be no longer employed save only in loving, serving, honouring, and glorifying You.   O most Sacred Heart, be the sole object of my love, the protector of my life, the pledge of my salvation, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death.  In You I place all my confidence; and convinced as I am of my own weakness, I rely entirely on Your goodness.  Annihilate in me all that is displeasing and offensive to Your purity.  Imprint Yourself like a seal on my heart, that I may ever remember my obligations and never be separated from You.  May I ever be a victim consecrated to Your glory, burning with the flame of Your pure love, and entirely penetrated with it for eternity.  In this I place all my happiness.

This I  desire:  To live and die in no other condition than that of Your devoted servant.

An Act of Reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

              From “Prayers Composed in Honour

of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

by  St Margaret Mary”, from Monsignor Gauthey’s edition, Paris, 1951

Most adorable and amiable Jesus, always filled with love for us, always touched by our miseries, always urged by the desire to make us share in Your treasures and to give Yourself entirely to us; Jesus, my Saviour and my God, who by an excess of the most ardent and the most prodigious of all loves, has placed Yourself in the state of Victim in the most adorable Sacrament of the Eucharist, in which You offer Yourself in sacrifice each day from the rising of the sun to its setting.

What must be Your sentiments in this state, when in return for all that You have done, You  find in the hearts of the greater part of men only unkindness, neglect, ingratitude and contempt!

Was it not enough, Oh my Saviour, to have chosen the most painful way to save us, although You could have shown us excessive love at the expense of much less suffering?

Was it not enough to abandon Yourself once to the cruel agony and the mortal languor, which the horrible vision of our sins with which You were laden was to cause You?

Why do You wish to expose Yourself again daily to all the indignities of which the most fiendish and malicious of men and demons are capable?

Ah! my God and my most loving Redeemer, what have been the sentiments of Your Sacred Heart at the sight of all these acts of ingratitude and all those sins?

How great has been the bitterness into which so many sacrileges and outrages have plunged Your Sacred Heart!

Filled with the deepest regret for all these indignities, behold me prostrate and annihilated before You in the presence of Heaven and earth, to make an act of reparation for all the indignities and outrages which You have received on our altars since the institution of this adorable Sacrament.

With a heart humbled and broken with sorrow, I ask Your pardon a thousand times for all these indignities.

Would that I could, O my God, water with my tears and wash with my blood all the places where Your Sacred Heart has been so horribly outraged and where the marks of Your love have been received with such strange contempt!

If only I could do this my Sovereign Lord, my Saviour and my Judge, whom I believe to be really present in the adorable Sacrament of the Eucharist.

I resolve for the future, by the respect which I shall show in His Presence and by my zeal in doing Him honour, to prove that I believe firmly in the Real Presence.

And as I make profession to honouring His Sacred Heart in a special manner, I wish to pass the rest of my life in this Divine Heart. Grant me, O my Jesus, the grace which I ask of You to breathe forth my last sigh at the hour of my death in Your Sacred Heart. Amen

Sacred Heart of Jesus Novena Prayers

This prayer was composed by St Margaret Mary, and the great St Padre Pio used to say this prayer every day for all who had asked his prayers,  and most of us know how powerful were the prayers of this great saint.

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.”

Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of…    (Mention your Intention Here)

Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory Be to the Father…

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.” Behold, in Your name, I ask the Father for the grace of…       (Mention your Intention Here)

Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory Be to the Father…

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.” Encouraged by Your infallible words I now ask for the grace of…        (Mention your Intention Here)

Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory Be to the Father…

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for Whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of You, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Your tender Mother and ours.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail our life, our sweetness and our hope.

To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to Thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.

Turn then, most gracious advocate, Thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of Thy womb, Jesus, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.

Amen.
